Leading Experts Appointed Associate Editors for JOEH

AIHA and ACGIH Appoint Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene Associate Editors

FALLS CHURCH, Va. (July 31, 2023)—AIHA and the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) have appointed Igor Burstyn, PhD, and Qingsheng Wang, PhD, PE, CSP, as the new associate editors of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene. Also known as JOEH, AIHA and ACGIH have jointly published the peer-reviewed journal on the knowledge and practice of occupational and environmental health and safety since 2004. The two associate editors will assist JOEH Editor-in-Chief, Mike Larrañaga, PhD, CIH, CSP, in selecting articles prior to peer review and guiding authors on manuscript development.

Burstyn is an associate professor at Drexel University and adjunct professor at Utrecht University. His research focuses on identifying the sources and health impacts of occupational and environmental exposures and has led several studies as the primary investigator. In particular, his interests concern the health effects of occupational and environmental exposures on children and pregnant people. He has published extensively on the topics of occupational hygiene, exposure assessment, and occupational and environmental epidemiology and presented his research at numerous conferences. Burstyn has received a doctorate in environmental and occupational health from Utrecht University, as well as a master’s degree in occupational hygiene and a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of British Columbia.

Wang, an associate professor of Chemical Engineering at Texas A&M University, has extensive experience in occupational safety, process and reactive chemical safety, nanocomposite manufacturing, and computational fluid dynamics. An internationally recognized and widely cited researcher with over 165 peer-reviewed journal publications, Wang has been invited to review for numerous journals, serves on five editorial boards, and has received a Certificate of Excellence in Reviewing from the Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries. Wang is also the subject editor for Process Safety and Environmental Protection and associate editor for the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry. Wang holds a doctorate in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemistry from Zhejiang University.

“We’re delighted to welcome Burstyn and Wang to the ranks of our dedicated team at JOEH as associate editors,” said Larrañaga. “Through their insightful contributions and innovative approach, we’re confident that their presence will further elevate the standard of excellence in our journal. Our goal is for JOEH to be a thriving platform that cultivates pioneering research, stimulates creativity, and safeguards the health and well-being of workers and their communities. “Burstyn and Wang’s expertise and dedication will undoubtedly enrich our journal’s mission of advancing knowledge and promoting excellence in the field of occupational and environmental hygiene,” said Lawrence D. Sloan, AIHA CEO. “I look forward to their valuable contributions and collaborative efforts to drive innovation, foster research excellence, and support the health and well-being of our workers and communities.”

Interim Executive Director of ACGIH Phillip Rauscher MPH, CIH, CSP, also welcomed the new associate editors. “Their arrival marks a pivotal moment in our journey, and we’re honored to have them join us in shaping the future of our publication,” he said. “Their expertise, dedication, and passion for academic excellence will be invaluable assets to JOEH. Together, we will embark on a collaborative journey, united by the pursuit of knowledge and the desire to make a lasting impact.”

With the addition of Burstyn and Wang, “our journal’s community grows stronger,” Rauscher said. “We’re confident that their remarkable contributions will leave an indelible mark on the field.”

JOEH publishes peer-reviewed research studies across a wide range of investigation types—including laboratory investigations, field studies, simulations, and secondary data analyses—that examine exposures, risks, and controls that can be used to understand how exposures relate to health outcomes and may be managed for the betterment of society. Predominantly, the journal focuses on stressors that relate to adverse health outcomes, including chemical, biological, radiation, noise, ergonomic, and psychosocial hazards, as well as how work-life organization affects these exposures. JOEH is freely accessible to AIHA and ACGIH members at oeh.tandfonline.com.

85 Years of Advancing Occupational and Environmental Health

As we continue our journey into our 85th year of protecting OEHS professionals, ACGIH reflects on its history and changes.

For 85 years, ACGIH has been considered a well-respected organization by individuals in the industrial hygiene and occupational and environmental health and safety industry. What began as a limited membership base has grown to the all-encompassing Voting Member category of today. During this time, ACGIH has grown and expanded without losing sight of its original goal – to encourage the interchange of experience among industrial hygiene workers and to collect and make accessible such information and data as might be of aid to them in the proper fulfillment of their duties. This original goal is reflected in both our current mission – the advancement of occupational and environmental health – and in our tagline: Defining Science for OEHS Experts.

ACGIH offers so much now to the OEHS professional. Over the years, we’ve:

  • opened our door to ‘all’ practitioners in the OEHS profession;
  • grown and diversified our membership;
  • gained more volunteers to provide their scientific knowledge in producing resources to keep us safe;
  • expanded our leadership to run our organization with expert guidance;
  • advanced our science to provide more accessible scientific data needed to protect the OEHS worker;
  • progressed in our education with an impressive increase in our educational opportunities;
  • produced scientific publications to give you accurate information to perform your job with confidence.

With the support of our member subscribers, ACGIH will continue this journey of protecting our industry workers and persistently pursue our work for more years to come.
