CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITING PESTICIDES

CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITING PESTICIDES

CHOLINESTERASE INHIBITING PESTICIDES

CAS number: See Table 1

Synonyms: There are many organophosphates and carbamates and many thousands of formulations and trade names. See Table 1 for common names and CAS numbers for Cholinesterase inhibitors with Threshold Limit Values (TLVs®).

Chemical formulae:

Organophosphate Insecticides: There are six classes of organophosphate insecticides based on the differing alkyl phosphate structures shown below (Maroni, 1986). In the general formulas, R1 and R2 denote alkyl groups, which can be aliphatic or aromatic. Frequently, R1 and R2 are identical. The nature of the X varies widely and can include alkyl, aromatic, halogen, or nitrile groups.

Carbamates: Carbamates are nitrogen-substituted esters of carbamic acid. Insecticides contain a methyl group in the R1 position (Maroni, 1988). Herbicides contain an aromatic group at the R1 position. Fungicides contain a benzoimidazole group in the R1 position. Fungicide carbamates do not inhibit acetylcholinesterase.
